Parappur: A Verdant Village Embraced by the Kadalundi River

Parappur Grama Panchayat is a land of exquisite natural beauty, nestled in the heart of Malappuram district, adjacent to the Vengara block of Tirurangadi taluk. Spanning an area of approximately 18.5 square kilometers, this village stands as a magnificent confluence of progressive development and timeless heritage.

Geography and Boundaries

The sacred Kadalundi River, which originates in the Sahyadri mountains and flows through the foothills of Karuvarakundu, gracefully bisects Parappur into two regions. The northern bank comprises Wards 1 to 12, while the southern bank hosts Wards 13 to 22. To the north, the village is bordered by Vengara and Oorakam Panchayats, and to the east by Othukkungal Panchayat. The southern frontier is guarded by Edarikode Panchayat and Kottakkal Municipality, while the western boundaries are shared with Edarikode and Vengara Panchayats.

Through the Corridors of History

Elders believe that the name "Parappur" originated from the phrase "Paranna Ooru" (the sprawling land). Another tradition suggests it is derived from the area where the Parappil families once resided. The Grama Panchayat was established in 1956, the same year the state of Kerala was formed. The first governing body election was held in February at the Parappur East L.P. School. In those early days, the 'show of hands' voting system was in practice, and Mr. T.E. Muhammad Haji assumed office as the first President.

In its nascent stage, the Panchayat functioned from a rented building in Veenalukkal as it lacked its own premises. In 1972, the current Panchayat building was constructed on land generously donated by the then President, Mr. T.T. Kunhalassankutty Haji. The administrative foundation was laid by Mr. K.P. Moossa, a retired military officer, who served as the first official. The village expanded into its modern form in 1961 with the incorporation of the Iringallur village.

Today, as Parappur reaches new heights of growth and modernization, it continues to move forward by meticulously preserving its unique history and cultural essence.
